"The problems which jiujitsu solves with leverage and trickery are ones that wrestling solves with smashing." - My Jiujitsu & Wrestling Coach (who teaches me both trickery and smashing)
I'm a strength and conditioning coach who trains and competes in jiujitsu. I'm kind of a Ronin warrior, training at many schools but belonging to none, so while I put in several hours a week of mat time, I'm still technically a white belt because I'm not anyone's student to promote. Nevertheless, depending on the school they're from, I smash blue belts and hang with low purples, or am super-competitive with high blues and make purples sweat their balls off. :-) I compete no-gi, intermediate division, and am just now finally training gi regularly, too. UPDATE: I've been sidelined by a series of injuries for some time, and am just getting back to training. If ever you had a golden opportunity to kick my ass, this is it. I'm rusty as hell. LOL
I love all kinds of matches: I love rolling with guys who're way better than me (because I can get better), I love rolling with guys who're not as skilled (because I can teach them and, let's be honest, it's hot to dominate ;-) ), and I LOVE rolling with guys I'm on par with... the best, hottest matches are when we go hard, I take some subs home, you take some subs home, or we stalemate, and we both had to use every scrap of our skill, heart, and cunning to do it.
The one thing I do ask is: come to wrestle. Be competitive. Try to kick my ass. Bring it... nothing is hotter than man vs man!
I'm also into tests of strength; arm-wrestling, mercy, weighted pull-up contest, tug-of-war, flipping tractor tires, deadlift or squat or bench maxes, whatever. Body to body tests of strength are also fun; scissors, bearhugs, full nelsons, etc. They're almost always useless as actual submission techniques in a match, but they're a pretty fun way to feel the other guy's power!
I have some training in stand-up; the older I get the less excited I am about getting punched in the face. Again, there are always exceptions and it never hurts to ask, but I'm way less likely to want to box or do mma than I am to grapple. Body shots during grappling are fine by me, and I'm developing an interest in gut punching.
Regarding travel; I'm the sole coaching staff for the gym I own, so traveling more than a few hours round trip means closing the gym for a day or more. Which means my clients can't train, which is not a great way to grow my business. So, I won't be on the road much.
On the flip side, I have a GREAT set of mats, 42' x 18', high quality, at said gym... a really great space in which I can toss you around. :-) Also, we can do whatever contests of strength we like, or just train together (again, if you're into any of that... if not, we can just roll, or fight, whatever). We'll have the WHOLE GYM to ourselves!
See you on the mat.

Indywarrior is very easy to plan and coordinate with. A very strong and a trained fighter but totally down to earth. He gave me great tips to improve and is a great trainer. Beware of his leg strength. I definitely recommend people to meet up and fight if they happen to be in his area.
This fellow is flexible and strong; he's one of the stronger guys at his weight I've come across in a while. And, he's got good instincts about where his weight goes, how to stay tight, how to keep hooks in. Untrained guys his size should expect an uphill battle.
I'm not his size, nor untrained, so it was a pretty one-sided experience for the poor guy. :-) He was super nice, communicated well while we were setting things up, was flexible with this time… he's welcome on my mats anytime he comes through Indy! If he comes through enough, I'll have him smashing anyone less than a blue belt skill level inside a year (hint hint).
Fun, enjoyable, nice set of moves and is fair on those with lots of skill or little. I look forward to meeting him more and more.
Teal is a big guy, with a lot of potential. Once I get him coming to my gym, and teach him some jiujitsu, he'll be a total bruiser. Today, though I had to teach him who his daddy is. :-P
Super fun, and I would be down for a rematch any time! Wrestle this guy if you get a chance.
Sometimes wrestling becomes a passion, and who better than this guy to prove it. He is definitely advanced level, but very good to adjust for beginners like me and show the ropes of wrestling.
He is very skilled and I really liked his patience and willingness to explain about wrestling moves even during the match!!! He never looked tired, seemed like he could wrestle non-stop.
If you want to learn and train no matter your level, this guy is a great chance.
A true warrior period extremely strong, extremely skilled, very, very dedicated to the sport. One of the nicest guys I have ever wrestled, as he was willing to adjust to my novice skill level and gave me some great pointers. A lot of fun and one heck of a workout with one heck of a guy.
Chris is a nice guy, very much a beginner and eager to learn. If he keeps showing as much interest in learning about wrestling as he did on the mat with me, it won't take him long to start getting real competitive! He was full of questions; I love that. You can tell a guy is really into wrestling, even if he's never trained, because he asks good questions.
What a great guy! Super gracious host, super friendly… you ask for more from a guy in that regard.
Gabe is a big, strong guy… if you are coming in without some basic wrestling skills, expect to get handled. Also, I taught him an americana, so watch out for that. ;-)
Victory was mine today, but I plan to wrestle this guy many more times, and I'm going to teach him more about jiujitsu every time I do, so the clock is ticking, guys! Get in before he's unstoppable. LOL
Has one of the best setups I've ever seen. Great guy and very skilled. Definitely was sore the next day.
UPDATE: Just finished my second match with CRedfield. Dude's legs are lean and strong. I've got a pretty big training advantage, so at one point I said, "I'll give you an opening, and only throw the very last line of defense, no preemptive escapes. You have five minutes to work." He worked.
His armbar, I could handle. His triangle choke, I went out trying to hang out in. LOL If you wrestle this man and do not come equipped with a working triangle escape, you've failed. This man doesn't skip leg day.
Overall, the day was muchly mine, but CRedfield is fun and scrappy and, like myself, a huge nerd so when you're both spent and sweaty you can hang out and talk gaming. Also, he keeps fighting to escape knee-on-belly, which is awesome because a lot of guys around here just tap. :-P
Once he starts letting me teach him jiujitsu, y'all are in some real trouble...
This guy is serious fun; competitive heart, willing to take some punishment, and capable of dishing some out. His legs are way stronger than you'd think. So much fun!
I have known this guy when he slowly got into the wrestling/fight game long ago. Back then he was strong, tough, enthusiastic and definitely knew what he was doing. He was always able to go hard and give me some of the best fights I've ever had. When not wrestling, I've some of the best weekends with this guy. With the years of training he's had, I can only imagine that our next battle will be an all out war. It's something I am looking forward to. This guy is an animal in the best way. You most likely will get your ass handed to you, but you will learn a lot as well.
UPDATE 11/12/16: Matjock and I got together for a couple hours of wrestling. What an awesome reunion! This dude is still strong, tough, and can take a punch. Woof! Unless you have a big pile of training (like I do ;-) ), expect to get whupped on, if not whupped. Dude is as intense and ready to go as ever.
It's been a long time since I've been on the mat with this guy... I can only imagine that with some time spent in jiujitsu he has, like myself, gotten much more beast than he was. And, he was pretty beast. Ready to thrash hard. Also, super cool; I spent a weekend with him once alternating between beating the crap outta each other and eating in the best restaurants he knew about in Chicago. Still stands out as one of my favorite weekends, ever. A top notch guy. One of these days, I hope to test his mettle again. :-)
Extremely skilled grappler. Dominated the match from start to finish and was nice enough to teach me in between. Looking forward to our next one. A fun experience and a great guy to meet. Highly recommend
This dude wants to learn, which is awesome. I schooled him, literally and figuratively, and he remembered everything I said... in one day we made his shrimping, base, guard passing, armbar, RNC defense, and americana better. This guy is like a sponge (both for jiujitsu knowledge, and punishment ;-) ).
Also, just a super nice and polite guy!
I'd totally wrestle him again, and I plan to coach him whenever he's in Indy, so if you're accustomed to taking him down, lookout!
Wow... so long ago. This guy was literally my second EVER wrestling match. And what a stud he was; totally owned me. Super hot, super nice guy.
I'm stoked we just found each other again... it sounds like we've both gotten some jiujitsu in us since the old days, and that smells like a rematch to me! :-)
Wrestled this guy way back in the day, like 1998 or 1999, when he lived in Indy. I was a wee mat baby, and knew nothing about wrestling other than that it made me feel funny competitive feelings and I wanted to do it. I think mattman may have been among my first five matches.
Super, super nice guy, gracious host, made an awkward dude feel comfortable and welcome, even when he was kicking my ass. LOL
It's been a while, but I'm totally down for a rematch, man!
This guy is the real deal!! We've been chatting for years, so it was awesome to finally meet up with IndyWarrior! He's very skilled, a great host, and has one of the best set ups I've ever seen! Don't pass up the chance to take this guy on...and bring you're A game b/c you'll need it!!
RNC is a fun guy, super friendly, and as everyone has said, his legs are way stronger that you'd think (fun fact: I hung out in his scissors, asked for more squeeze, didn't tap ;-) ).
My skill and power won the day decisively, but dude would not stop coming at me, always ready to try again. Great heart for wrestling; I can see why he dominates a fair number of his foes. When he learns some jiujitsu, watch out.
You won't regret setting a match with this guy!
Man. I can't say enough good things about this beast
I was very grateful that he took the time to meet up with me. He's very skilled & strong as an ox.
He took the time to teach me some new moves & we had blast rolling for well over an hour
Definitely roll with this man cause I'm definitely gonna do it again
This dude is a beast; a mountain of strong grappler with a desire to win and who is (excessively, if you ask me ;-) ) humble about both his strength and skill. He's also able to be intense and competitive without being reckless; win or lose, you are safe with him (and if you aren't able to hang with at least jiujitsu blue belts in your own weight class, you are probably going to lose).
It's been a minute since a guy from MF has made me work this hard; I managed to eek out a 5-4 victory after 1.5 hours of almost literally non-stop, sweat-soaked, exhausting battle, but I can tell that tomorrow I'm gonna feel like I was hit by a truck (because I was), so a case can probably be made that I lost. Bones has great instincts, is quick, has good base, and a very annoyingly effective triangle escape. I didn't land it one time. LOL
I would absolutely wrestle this guy again, and again and again and again, hopefully a million more times. Though if he takes my advice and finds a way to get some jiujitsu in his life, I will start getting my ass handed to me. ;-)
Great host and grappler I'll say. Hands like an octopus, He has a strong tight body that can handle himself on the mats. Yes I tapped him once and tapped to him 4 times. He tried many submission that I was able to defend. One on top of the other non stop. I enjoyed the stand off and took many chances so I could defend his attack. We were able to go back and forth like a good tennis match. My Idea of a good roll. Next time I will try not to roll after a 7 hour drive and roll longer. If you get a chance to roll with him, you will be bless with a good match. You must bring your A game. He will have his.
This man knows his shit. If you are less than a blue belt skill level in jiujitsu, expect to get manhandled. His base is great, and his ability to keep his elbows connected to his body is downright annoying. I got four taps out of him, and he got me once, during our hour and change on the mat. I can hardly wait until we get to roll again!
One of the most awesome grappling matches I've had with a guy. I lost. Big time. That doesn't happen often. The entire experience was amazing. I can't wait to do it again.
IndyWarrior is a real Warrior, from the moment we started rolling, his skill and strength over powered me. He let me have the upper hand for a few minutes, only to take control again. we kept going for a while, a long while. One of the most fun/intense match I've ever had. Great guy all around! every minute with him was enjoyable. Very eager to meet again to show off the 20 lbs of muscle ive put since we met. ^_^
One of my most fun matches; between my size and skill, I dominated, but the dude took it and took it and took it and fought back hard every fall and asked for more. Anyone his own size will be in the danger zone, especially if he gets some jiujitsu under his belt! I'm down for a rematch, buddy. ;-)
This guy is exetremly skilled and tuff. Had a great gym and can show you a few things as well. One of the most friendly guys off the mats and I highly recommend him
Indywarrior was my toughest opponent to date. He is an excellent grappler with incredible jiu jitsu skills. He has his spacious mats at his gym. Friendly guy and great opponent. He had me submitting every fall, I enjoyed taking him on very much and hope to take him on again soon. Very recommended.
wrestlestowin was great about our match; communicated clearly, showed up on time, was totally cool, no drama. He also shows up to wrestle; he wanted to kick my butt and no matter how many times I mauled him ( and make no mistake, it was a mauling :-P ) he wanted to keep going and attacked me again. He's got exactly the kind of attitude that'll make him dangerous to lots of guys on here if he invests the time in training jiujitsu (hint hint, buddy). I'd totally be down for a rematch.
You were one of my tougher matches; you used a wrist lock repeatedly which I wasn't used to. In the end I dominated. Great match. Rematch anytime we are in the same area
It's been quite a while ago now that I wrestled with Armbar. Even though I outweighed him by like, thirty pounds, he manhandled me. The man knows his jiujitsu, never doubt. I'm an order of magnitude better at jiujitsu now, and would love a rematch (hint hint), but if you have the chance to grapple with this guy, do it. You'll probably learn something. :-)
Great guy! I had a great time on the mats with this beast of a warrior. He is strong and knows his jiu jitsu. Such a blessing to have been able to host him during his stay as well. I look forward to meeting him again in battle!
Super nice guy, great host... we didn't actually get to wrestle because his shoulder was outta commission, but he graciously opened his home to me and some other guys so we could use his mats.
Sadly, we didn't get our second session in because I had to drop everything and head home to deal with a crisis. Will definitely meet again!
Had a blast with this guy... we did all kinds of strength contests he even won some... :-P ). He's got a powerful squeeze! Strong, enthusiastic, a cool guy on and off the mat. When he gets some serious jiujitsu under his belt, he's going to be very dangerous.
I had a great time grappling IndyWarrior! It's rare to find someone who trains and really is into the sport of grappling as much as I am! We provided each other great competition and neither of us eased up which is just what I like!
If you're serious about competing and want a challenge, Roll with IndyWarrior!
Great guy, great wrestler. Highly recommended.
Been a while since we wrestled, but he works out a ton and is now even tougher. A real dude who will show and adjust to his opponent. Give him a try if you get near. a good egg.
Can't say anything that hasn't been said. I would like to say it was a pleasure to get my ass kicked by this man, but that would be a lie because he's clearly not a man, he's a fight-bot.
Seriously, great guy, you'll learn much. Unless you're eyeing a championship at AbuDabi, don't step on the mat with an expectation to dominate.
Loved grappling this guy. We only rolled the one time... long ago right when I was beginning to train. He owned me, but he was totally under control the whole time. Now that I'm more experienced, hoping to get another crack at him. :-) But, you don't need my feedback; look at the stack of other recommendations. He's a solid bloke.
He's a great host and not afraid to step up to a tough challenge. Definitely recommended.
Can't say much about Mike that hasn't been said. Dude is huge, strong, skilled. Hits like a truck. (And I'm pretty sure he was taking it easy). LOL
He kicked my butt, nevertheless, it was a fun match. If you have any thoughts of being competitive with this guy, you'd better be either world class or skilled AND in his weight class. Better both, probably.
I'm sure we'll roll again.
He's a load of fun to wrestle with! Can't wait till we meet on the mat again!
Ran into this guy a long time ago (sorry it's taken me so long to get around to this, man!)... He's the real deal; competent, skilled, stupidly strong. He's also great at controlling his power, so if you're a noob, no worries... you'll still have a great experience. He kicked my butt, but I'm about ten times stronger and way more skilled now... looking forward to the rematch! :-)
Technical and naturally strong fighter. Genuine and pretense-free.
Hope we will have big mats at our disposal next time.
Great guy; looking forward to wrestling him again! He was very gracious about the situation when my mat space became unavailable unexpectedly (a situation which will not occur again, now that I own the gym), and is strong and knows his way around the mat. Looking forward to a proper match!
Wrestled IndyWarrior several times years ago in Los Angeles, and can only echo the other recommendations. He's one of the Good Guys. If you unaccountably find yourself in America's Bowels (Indiana), reward yourself and wrestle this cat.
Rowdy Submission is fierce, tough, mouthy, and a really nice guy. Expect a fantastic match with this guy. He and I wrestled many times back in the day, and he was probably the most evenly matched opponent I ever took to the mat. (Now, of course, I'd trounce him... :-P ). Off the mat, he's great to hang with. I wish I were still Local to LA, but hopefully he'll take New Road to the bowels of America someday soon. In the meantime, if you're in his area, look him up!
