Slow and Methodical is always a Great way to start. Especially for those less experienced, or working with a new opponent for the first time. Speed and intensity can be increased in increments that prevent unexpected outcomes. Successful 1st meets often lead to both guys wanting a 2nd match that is rougher and more intense. Trust opens up new avenues of exploration.
I've never lived near a gym, so trained lots of guys with no experience. The point was to make them into regular sparring partners, so I knew I couldn't hurt them the first few lessons or they would lose interest. You need to be sure of a trainer's motivation. Even if you're trained you can't compete with much younger guys, so have to be careful with that too.
Those of us that started boxing beyond our prime and likely untrained or have a fight with someone that hates gays often get serious injuries. I boxed a trained boxer who picked and chose those he wanted to put in the hospital and suffer with REAL injuries and sometimes surgery to correct the damage....
I do enjoy one side boxing with those I know and trust..
