Film or not to film

It’s true that I love recording my wrestling videos. In fact, I’ve found an audience that enjoys them, and I’m happy to share my passion with you all.

However, I have to say that beyond all of that, I still feel a huge thrill when I wrestle without the cameras rolling. Sometimes, being focused on how I look, how to execute the holds, and how to create personalized content makes me lose sight of the pure enjoyment of this passion.

On the other hand, a real match against a new opponent or someone experienced in competitive wrestling—where you test your improvements, keep learning, and constantly challenge yourself—always brings an incredible rush. In fact, I think it’s nearly impossible to record those matches because they last for hours. My last match was this week, and between recovery and all the rounds, we wrestled for three hours.

It’s not the same to film short sessions that fit within a specific timeframe as it is to let everything flow naturally. When you push yourself to the limit in a final showdown, giving your all until exhaustion leaves you on the mat with no strength left—that’s the real essence of what I love to do.

If I could capture those kinds of matches, I definitely would, because they are the true reason behind my passion.

Sincerely,
Nick

This is why, when in conversation with others who film, my first question or comment involves the stress of taking something that's supposed to be fun and turning it into work. That you're even thinking or writing in this way suggests that you understand what you're losing by turning this activity into something about money or clout or ego.

In an ideal world, you should be able to do both, but the more I interact with people who film, the less I like and identify with them as a wrestler or athlete. Everything becomes about a transaction, not an interaction. People who I will never truly know or be in relationships with because to do so is for them to take time away from those above three factors. People who will not take the time to build relationships unless it involves what they can profit from. The manner in which they speak about this practice and community often becomes a massive turn off as a result.

No one should shame you into enjoying wrestling simply because they think you owe us more content, including yourself. The men who filmed 20 and 30 years ago, they did so to meet each other, not to be exclusionary or become rich. That's what we've lost in the time since, and that should be the opposite of what we gain from more of us finding this community. So never lose that passion to enjoy what you love, or the reason to pursue it.

That ideal world in this case, is just fiction. You can't do both. At least not equality and with satisfaction. One will always take priority over the other.

As for all the rest...well said! 👍🏼

There have been studies in the reactions of people that concludes they behave differently when they know they're being filmed. You're absolutely correct in that your focus and attention will be divided when you know your every move is being recorded.

I find it almost impossible to fully enjoy a match when I am also thinking about lighting and camera angles. This is why I have filmed so few of my meetings. I often think back on guys from the past who I wish I had videos of. Ideally, I would need a 3rd person present who could always worry about those details while I concentrate on enjoying my match

If / when I wrestle and it happens to get filmed. I can only be me. My few vids aren't showstoppers. Just two guys usually in a lighthearted contest of skill strength and stamina filled with taunts, laughs, huge smiles and maybe a few good submissions. Enjoy the ride and keep filming.

Well, just position the camera, let it roll, forget and enjoy the match ;)
