This is shaping up for Saturday 26th October from 12 noon til 6. Support and interest are growing. I will post the event soon.
This is a charity and prize money event so I am going to price it a little higher than some other events. I have in mind the following entry fees:
£25 for wrestlers £10 for spectators £0 for non wrestling referees
The prize will be £100 cash per weight class.
I need 17 wrestlers to break even. Everything above that will go to charity. I have been using Cancer Research UK in discussions but if anyone has any strong views for a possible alternative, please shout.
Would it not be great if we could make this a big event?
Maybe 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes? If we have a range of abilities represented it would be nice to have more than one winner, or it might be too predictable.
Oh, and please.... can we NOT use the word "purse"?
Why ever not? Purse has a certain classic feel to it. Now "handbag" I would take issue with lol.
I'm keeping this simple. The point is that we are big enough as a community to be able to field tournaments and there's no reason why it should be difficult.
Let's do it, have a good day and add it as a new aspect of life in the wrestling community. I am sure we will make a few mistakes and learn from them.
Well thought out mate, this really would be good, one stage further on from normal submission wrestling, and with another edge with the added limited striking. Can I suggest 2 things? if the venue is Pippas it would be better to just have the main room so no guys dissapear off into the side rooms, so everyone gets to see all the matches, and all involved could be the referees, rather than just one guy, then all would see fair play. I really hope this happens mate, count me in.
Folks, I am not contemplating a full on NHB thing here. Safe sane wrestling but with a proper competitive edge and a purse to back it up. Not to mention a charity donation.
OK this is an idea I had on the train coming back from a Grapevine meet at Pippas and I am posting this just to see whether it has legs.
You get the gist. Would you be interested? To keep it productive can I just get a show of hands as it were? I am just curious to know who would be up for participating as a wrestler, organiser and/or referee. We can refine the rules in a separate discussion
The prize. Half of entrance fees collected (cash on the day) minus the booking fee divided by the weight classes. The other half goes to charity.
Eligibility. Members of this site who have at least 5 past opponents.
The venue. Pippas in Manchester seems the obvious place.
The structure. Random selection within each weight class then Wimbledon style knockout- winner v winner until one person wins the class.
Weight classes: <75 kgs, 75-95, 95+. Perhaps also a tag category without weight classes.
Scoring. Best of 3 subs to win.
Gear. Wear what you like (as long as you remove the feathers before you get on the mats).
Rules. Standing starts. Up to 3 gloved body punches allowed (to keep the wrestling emphasis) to each wrestler. No stalemates; compulsory breaks if a hold is going nowhere. No repeated subs; you can only score the same sub once in the match. No rounds. Fight to exhaustion. No time limit. No winning on points. Win or lose according to subs only. Break if you fall outside the mats or ring.
Fouls. No gouging, biting, hair pulling, slapping. No holds of fewer than 3 fingers. No holding the ropes. No sleepers or strangleholds. Warning on first offense then disqualification.

"This is a wrestling tournament but if both combatants agree, up to three gloved body punches in a match are permitted."
Hmm, if both combatants agree, how about permitting strangle/choke holds (which ARE a part of wrestling)?

I'd prefer not to permit strangles or chokes as they can be dangerous

We should be able to get at least 8 in each group. I hope we can get a tag class going too.
