Great Escapes

Escaping from a hold depends on how "final" the hold is. I think it is OK to keep trying if you are training with a particularly sane person who will try to make sure you won't injure yourself in the process. But if you are at a competition and you know you are in, say, an arm lock, the sane choice is to tap.

About pins...

This reminds me of a joke that one of the iaido instructors played. He opened with saying that he would show us an escape, and ask two students to pin him any way they wanted. They would proceed to dogpile him. The instructor would then say, "OK great, now let go for a moment", at which point they would assume it is still part of the setup and comply. At this point the instructor stood and said, "that's how". :)

When I'm pinned, what I usually try to do is look for a way to put the guy off balance.

Generally I find that it is a bad idea to try a counterattack in a bad situation against an opponent that managed to pin me in the first place. Usually it just provides him with better opportunities, making a bad situation for me worse.

Suggested: www.worldOfSportEnglishWrestling. Clean and fast paced. Usually, an oppo escapes from a side head lock by twisting as well as grabbing his opponent's wrist. The English practically rely on wristlocks. Bob in Oregon. [email protected] I am hunting for a Web bud. Thanks.

This is bullshit.

This group is about submission wrestling, not fake pro stuff. Sturdy was asking a legitimate question about escaping a real technique, not an imaginary roleplayed pin done for show!

You tried to shamelessly plug yourself, instead now you look like an idiot.

What are your favourite techniques for escaping from a hold/pin?

I recently saw a programme on TV that demonstrated escapes from a standing headlock.

1 - As a general rule: Turn your face/throat towards his hand (the weakest part of the lock), turn your whole body this way if you can. This helps stop you from being choked.

2 - Try standing up - your back and leg muscles may overcome the strength of his arms

3 - Counterattack by reaching forward with your nearest arm and push back against his throat

4 - Crouch down, place one foot in front of and between his, now reach back and take hold of his legs. Pull and stand up, he will fall on his ass!
